Education system in Malaysia

In Malaysia the system of education is supervised by two ministries, the Ministry of Education (Kementrian Pelajaran) and the Ministry of Higher education (Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi). The ministry education deals with pre-school, primary school, secondary school and post secondary school education. On the other hand the Ministry of higher education deals with the tertiary education.Even though the education is federal’s government responsibililty, there are separate education department ofr each star to deal with education in its region. The education act of 1996 is the major legislation governing.

The multilingual public school system offers free education to all the Malayans the Education can also be acquired through homeschooling or private schools. According to law primary education is a compulsory education. Standardised test is c common feature in many Asia Pacific countries like Singapore, Japan, and Republic of Korea.

Preschool Education


There are no fixed norms as to when a child should start his education, but most of them start the preschool education when they are 5 years old. The Schooling can commence a little bit earlier in the Kindergarten between 3 to 6 years. The preschool education can last for up to 2 years before they advance to primary school education at the age of 7. Other than formal mandatory training and principals certification there is no formal preschool curriculum prior to they may manage a preschool. The training envelops child psychology lessons, methodologies on teaching and other childcare and development associated
curricula.

Primary education

At the age of seventh the kids start their primary education and it last for up to six years. The primary school are categorised into two divisions they are the national primary and the vernacular schools. The vernacular school (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan) utilizes Chinese or Tamil as the instruction medium. Other than English, science and math, Bahas Malaysia is the medium of instruction utililsed by the national primary school (Seskolah kebangaasan)

The national type schools are further categorized into Chinese national-type schools (Sekolah Jenis kebangsaasn Cina, SJK(c) and Tamil national type schools (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil, SJK(T)).

Secondary Education


The secondary schools (Sekolah Menegah kebangsaan) conducts the secondary education in Malaysia. An extension of the national schools is the Public secondary  schools. Normally the study is in five forms. It will take a period of one year. Nevertheless some students because of their poor academic results need to study in “Remove” before they can study in Form 1or choosing to do basically which is achievable in certain schools. At the conclusion of form 3, the students take the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR, previously called as the Sijil Pelajaran Rendah (SRP) or Lower Certificate of Education (LCE) or the Lower

Secondary Evaluation.

At the secondary level the co-curricular activities are compulsory. The student should take at least participate in two activites in two states and in 3 actives for the Sarawak region. At form three end, i.e., on the third year, the students are appraised in the Lower Secondary Assessment (Penilaian Menengah Rendah, PMR) by the 2016 the PMR is likely to be abolished. Before the secondary school at the end of form 5 the students need to take Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Malaysian Certification of Education examination

Soon , in March 2006,after the 2005  SPM results release it was considered by the education ministry the it was taking into account restructuring the SPM system owed to what was professed as over prominence

Pre-University education

From the public secondary school, the students after the SPM have an option of studying either Form 6 or the (preuniversity) matriculation. If they are acknowledged to carry on studying in Form 6 the student swill as well as take the Sijil Tingi Persekolahan,( abbreviated as STPM) or the Malaysian Higher School Certificate Examination(its British corresponding is the General Certificate of Education’A’ level of Examination or globally, the Higher School certificate )

The Malaysian Examinations controls the STPM. Two years of study constitutes form 6 (Tingkatan Enam Rendah) and the Upper 6 (Tingatan Enam Atas)

Tertiary Education

The Malaysian Government heavily subsided the Tertiary education. Prior to the matriculation system  introduction, the students aspiring to get into public universities has to finish in form 6 an extra 18 month duration of secondary schooling and sit down for the Malaysian Higher School certificate(Sijiil Tinggi Perssekolahan Malaysia, STPM) which is equal to the British Advanced or “A “levels
