Friday, 18th November 2011 The inspiring visit of His Lordship, Bishop Derek Fernandes, Bishop of Karwar to Kuwait revealed hope and joy for the members of the North Kanara Association Kuwait (NKA-K). Bishop Derek celebrated Holy Mass at St. Therese Church, Salmiya at 10:00 hrs with NKA-K members. How wonderful to have such wholehearted community participation especially camp workers who came all the way to give due respect to His Lordship.
A gathering followed at the Indian English Academy School Hall (Don Bosco School), Salmiya with 'flower petal' greetings from the little children. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Alphonso, Patron members of NKA-K together with Mr. Joseph L. D'Souza, President and Mr. John Fernandes, Vice-President, welcomed the Bishop to light the Lamp amidst a beautiful prayer dance by the children. Mr. Joseph D'Souza in his opening speech extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, guests and members. His Lordship, Bishop Derek Fernandes, shared His message "to remain united and to reach out to one another." Mr. Sam Alphonso, briefed about his and the Bishop's recent visit to the villages of the Karwar Diocese, on their appalling rate of illiteracy and ignorance. Mr. Alphonso emphasized the urgent need to educate the children, a pathway to empower and build up the next generation in the Karwar Diocese.
The cultural program incorporated a well-composed Konkani welcome song, solo and duet vocalists, entertaining skits with comedy combined with Arabic and Konkani folk dances. Great animation by Mrs. Marita Miranda (English) and Mr. Salvador D'Souza (Konkani). Mr. John Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks. All enjoyed a sumptuous buffet.
Sunday, 20th November 2011 All good things come to an end but not too soon for the North Kanara AssociationKuwait. The committee members stood by their motto 'United We Serve' by inviting the domestic workers to the Holy Eucharistic celebration at the Holy Family Cathedral, Kuwait. An opportunity for Bishop Derek to speak with His flock and share in their grievances. Mr. Sam Alphonso, requested His Lordship to urge the people to educate their children and assured financial assistance for this cause. At the Padre Pio Hall, the committee members commingled with domestic workers, turning this get-together into a significant reach-out. Refreshments were served.
