UK Spouse / Civil Partner Visa

The spouse/civil partner visa for UK is primarily given for a probationary period of two years, and is directed to imprecise leave to Remain (ILR) and the British Nationality.

But if the couple is involved in civil partnership or have been wedded for a minimum period of four years preceding the application lodgment, then an ILR application can be done directly.


During the time of visa application submission, the Spouse/Civil visa applicants must prove that they are married lawfully, or that they are in social relationship with a spouse, who is a permanent resident or national of the United Kingdom. The person should be an authentic partner / spouse and the couple should plan to stay jointly in the United Kingdom.

The basic conditions for the UK Spouse/Civil Partner Visa

The applicant who intend to get a UK Spouse/Civil Partner Visa, are required to meet the fundamental conditions laid down by the Immigration Authorities of the UK. Irrespective whether the candidates is applying in the UK, or abroad or seeking an extension, the fundamental requiremenst are almost the same.

The candidate need to fulfill some specific requirements, in order to get qualified for the Entrance Clearance, or application for further Leave to stay as a civil partner of spouse for a probationary period of two years. Both the parties should have completed 21 years of age; they should have met and got married legally, or should have undergone a procedure for a civil partnership.

The candidates should prove that their relationship is authentic and that they have an enduring relationship.

The entitlements for Spouse/Civil Partner visa

Initially, the Spouse/Civil Partner visa is issued for a probationary time period of two years. The bearer of the visa have unobstructed consent to either study or work in the United Kingdom. Without any additional permission, the holders of this visa can leave and enter the UK as they wish during this period.

On the two year probationary period completion, the bearers of the visa can apply for the Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). The ILR bearers in this group, once they are legally living in the United Kingdom for 3 years with their civil partner/spouse can apply for the UK Nationality.
