Immigrants requesting for Canadian citizenship should furnish written evidence about their language capabilities (English or French), Mr. Jason Kenney, Immigration minister specified in his speech.

CIC (Citizenship & Immigration Canada) has made this change as part of the latest reforms, on its immigration rules.

Minister Kenney in his Montreal council speech said that there are several citizens in Canada who cannot express themselves in English or French, even though they live in the country for a long time.

He said that this cannot be accepted as it confines their life and their social mobility in Canada.He declared that the changes made in the rules for Canadian citizenship, requires an immigrant who wishes to become a Canadian citizen, must exhibit objective proof on his language ability together with the application.

Therefore, potential Canadian citizens are now required to furnish new papers like Proof for their completion of secondary or post secondary education in French or English.

Proof that they have successfully finished government funded language training programs.

Results of language tests accepted by a 3rd party.

Minister Kenney said the linguistic evidence is intended to make sure that all individual who join them in future, as complete members in their Canadian family are capable of participating wholly in their society.

The Canadian government also offers free language training program to the permanent residents.
