BPL launches rechargeable lantern

Lucknow, May 5 (IANS) BPL Techno Vision Private Limited (BTVL) - one of the country’s leading rechargeable lighting system companies - Thursday launched Chirag, a rechargeable lantern, and hoped it would benefit the rural populace in states, a company official said.

“With the Q Tech technology, unlike the 8-12 hours of charging required by other lights, BPL Chirag requires only 4 hour and gives 5 hours of light. Moreover, the unique technology allows charging even in fluctuating power," BTVL’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) K. Vijaya Kumar told reporters.

“The innovative product priced at Rs.849 would particularly benefit the rural populace in states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa as villages there get power supply for 4 hours daily on an average," he added.

After its national launch in Lucknow, BPL Chirag would be available across Uttar Pradesh through 40 distributors in 2,000 retail outlets in the state.

“In later phases, BPL Chirag would be available across India," said Kumar.

Asked why the company chose Uttar Pradesh for the national launch of the product, Kumar said: “The foremost reason for this is the poor power supply in Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, taking into account the vastness of Uttar Pradesh, we expect to strengthen our market base," he added.
