High-tech swoop against illegals paying off

Government security and labor inspectors are now using state-of-the-art technology on computer tablets to identify whether expatriates are living and working legally in the country.
The technology is saving the authorities time and effort because the identity of a person can be determined on the spot, whether in the city or out in a remote area, according to officials.
Col. Aati Al-Qurashi, spokesperson of Makkah’s police department, said officers have already conducted inspections at 2,500 facilities and registered 1,400 violations using the system. Cases are also registered immediately, he said.
The devices scan residence permits and upload other information immediately to government servers such as permits and the locations where inspections take place, sources said.
The information of a worker appears instantly in Arabic and English once an iqama is scanned. The technology is also helping ensure inspectors operate more efficiently because it tracks where raids have taken place.
Many labor ministry inspectors are going out in the field wearing civilian clothing, similar to those worn by expatriates, the sources said.
This is the second phase of the government’s latest attempt to regulate the labor market, which is determining whether workers are working for their sponsor and not other people or companies. The first phase of the campaign had identified illegal workers and deported them.
