Expat workers turn to NSHR for justice

RIYADH: The National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) has received 218 complaints from foreign workers facing problems with their employers, local media said quoting well-informed sources.
The frustrated workers turned to the NSHR after experiencing long delays by dispute settlement officers at labor offices, an Arabic daily quoted the sources as saying.
According to the sources, financial claims constituted the bulk of disputes between expat workers and employers. Riyadh had the highest rates at 58 cases, followed by Jazan at 21, the sources said.
Other expat-employer problems included service transfer (56 cases), travel bans (21 cases), psychological pressure on workers (12 cases), and forced repatriation (six cases), the sources said.
Meanwhile, a dispute settlement officer at a labor office in Jeddah, who requested anonymity, said the majority of cases were concerned with laborers in the private sector. Most of them complained they were subjected to enormous psychological pressure from their bosses or officials, a matter that prompted them to give up jobs without being paid for the period they worked with the company, he said.
In a related development, the Labor Ministry has given more time to contracting firms to complete the wage protection system with local banks, an official of the National Committee of Contractors (NCC) told local media.
The NCC recently discussed with newly appointed Minister of Labor Mufrej Al-Haqabani a series of challenges facing the contracting sector, said a member of the NCC at the Council of Saudi Chambers (CSC).
