Companies told to publish bylaw protecting workers’ rights
The Labor Ministry has urged all companies having more than 10 workers to set out a bylaw to protect the rights of employees. “The ministry has published a model bylaw on its website for guidance,†said Abdullah Abuthnain, deputy minister for inspection and development of work environment. He said the main objective of the bylaw was to make the employer and employee aware of their rights and responsibilities. “Companies can add new articles to the law based on their policies but without violating the Kingdom’s Labor Law,†he said. The model bylaw has 117 articles. He emphasized the ministry’s desire to protect the rights of both employees and employers. The bylaw should include incentives for hardworking workers and punishment for violators, he said, adding that fines imposed on workers should be used for employees’ welfare. Abuthnain said the ministry would endorse the bylaw within 60 days after receiving it from companies, which are supposed to keep the law in a place accessible to all employees. Meanwhile, the Labor and Interior Ministries have imposed punishment on 11 Saudis for committing violations such as transporting and sheltering intruders. The fines imposed on them ranged between SR20,000 and SR425,000. They will also face jail sentence up to 6 months.
