New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS) The swollen Yamuna river Wednesday crossed the danger mark after water was released upstream from Haryana's Hathini Kund dam. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said all arrangements had been made to evacuate low-lying areas and provide relief to the affected people.


"Employees of concerned departments have been deployed in three shifts in order to make available relief services. There should be no panic," said Dikshit.

Dikshit took stock of the flood-like situation along with Revenue Minister A.K. Walia and instructed the agencies to make coordinated efforts to provide relief and ensure that there was no loss of life and property.

"Those evacuated from low-lying areas have been given shelter in tents nearby. Pumps are in place and officers are keeping constant vigil," said Walia.

"Hospitals and dispensaries situated in flood areas have all necessary medicines to cater to the needs of patients," he added.

According to officials, Yamuna is expected to touch the 205 metre-mark due to heavy discharge of water Tuesday from Hathinikund dam.

The discharge from Hathinikund at 8 a.m. Wednesday was 3,83,000 cusec and 3,57,000 at 9 a.m., and it declined to 1,88,000 by 3.30 p.m., an official of the Flood and Irrigation Department said.

In case the declining trend continues, then the river will start receding by the weekend, the official added.
