Verdict on uniform school syllabus in Tamil Nadu welcomed

Chennai, Aug 9 (IANS) Leaders of various political parties in Tamil Nadu Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict directing the state government to implement immediately a uniform system of school education for Classes 1 to 10.

The Tamil Nadu government had appealed against the Madras High Court order of last month that struck down the amendments made by the J.Jayalalitha government to the uniform system of school education.

The Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act, introduced by the preceding DMK government, sought to usher in a common school syllabus for students of the state board, matriculation, oriental and Anglo-Indian streams.

Reacting to the apex court's order, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa told the Assembly that the government would implement the uniform school syllabus system.

DMK President and former Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi said that the verdict was a victory for the Samacheer Kalvi Scheme (uniform education scheme) and a lesson to the AIADMK government.

He said that the verdict, expected by around 1.5 crore students, their parents, teachers and others, should be celebrated.

The State Secretary of Communist Party of India, D.Pandian, said that the verdict came as a big relief to the students.

MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, Communist Party of India-Marxist State Secretary G.Ramakrishnan, BJP's Tamil Nadu President Pon Radhakrishnan and PMK leader S.Ramadoss also welcomed the apex court order.
