Using of Foreign driving license in Finland.

Driving license got from EEA or any other EU nation, as well the interim driving license obtained from Nordic countries, permits the holder to drive a motor vehicle in Finland, equal to those specified on the Non Finnish license. The holder of the license must be a minimum of 18 years of age. This permission to drive the vehicle is applicable irrespective whether the individual has come to Finland on tour or with the intention to stay permanently.

An individual permanently staying in a nation that has signed the Vienna or Geneva Road Traffic convention and who has a international or national driving license or an authorized national driving license translated into Finnish or Swedish language is allowed to drive the motor vehicle equal to those specified on the non Finnish license up to a period of one year subsequent to his entry into Finland, provided he fulfill the age requirement to drive a vehicle in Finland.

The permission to drive a vehicle depends on the ownership of driving license obtained by a person permanently staying in a nation that has the signed the convention. A driving license obtained in such a nation during temporary residence (for instance as an exchange learner) does not allow the owner to drive Finland.

Other driving license

Driving license not obtained from any of the signatory counties does not give the permission to drive in Finland. However, based on your application the police may give a provisional driving license up to an utmost period of 1 year without the requirement of driver assessment. Subsequent to this, the Finnish driver assessment should be taken.
