Two arrested for raping student in old-age home
Hyderabad, April 18 (IANS) Two people were Monday arrested for allegedly gang-raping an 18-year-old college student staying in an old-age home with her blind mother here, police said.
The suspects were picked up based on the call details on the mobile phone of the victim.
It was not clear how many people were involved in the incident Sunday, an official said, adding that gang-rape had been confirmed.
The girl, who was staying with her visually challenged mother at old age home, is still in shock and police hope to close in on the suspects after recording her version.
Police suspect the girl was raped in a car and thrown out near a church, where she had gone for prayers along with her mother Sunday.
The second year intermediate student stepped out of the church after she received a call on her mobile phone.
Police Commissioner A.K. Khan said three teams had been formed to arrest the culprits.
Women's organisations staged protests in different parts of the city demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits and strong punishment to them.
Leaders of political parties also called on the victim at the Government Maternity Hospital.
Former chief minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu announced a financial assistance of Rs.50,000. He said the NTR Trust will also bear all the educational expenses of the victim.
