Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh), April 19 (IANS) Locals fought pitched battles with police, damaged vehicles, public property and blockaded roads here Tuesday after a 10-year-old girl was mowed down by a speeding truck, officials said.

 
 Sheena, a Class four student, was run over by the truck in Shakti Nagar town while she was on her way to school. The driver escaped and is on the run.
 
 Demanding the driver's arrest, protesters torched the truck and clashed with the police when they were prevented from targeting private vehicles and hoardings.
 
 "The situation is well under control, but still tense. Security in the area has been strengthened," police inspector R.S Chauhan told reporters in Sonbhadra, some 350 km from Lucknow.
 
 The situation was brought under control after senior officials of the district administration and police reached the spot and assured the protesters that the driver would be arrested within 24 hours.
