Train accident derails services

Bangalore/Chennai, Sep 14 (IANS) A train accident near Chennai that left 10 people dead has disrupted rail services in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, officials said.

Train services to Chennai from Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli in Karnataka were hit. Restoration work is on at the accident site near Arakkonam, some 85 km from Chennai.

Some trains have been cancelled and rescheduled, the South Western Railway said.

Ten people were killed and 86 injured late Tuesday when the Chennai Beach-Vellore suburban train hit the stationary Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger train. Eight coaches from both trains were derailed.

The Bangalore-Chennai day express train has been cancelled while the Lalbagh and Brindavan intercity superfast to Chennai and the Sanghamitra Express to Varanasi via Chennai have been re-scheduled.

The railways operate about 10 mail and express trains daily towards the northern and eastern regions through the affected route.

Among the cancelled trains were Kovai Express, Duranto Express, both to Coimbatore, the Brindavan Express to Bangalore, and the Tirupathur-Yelagiri Express and Yeracaud Express between Erode and Chennai.
