Ties with Congress smooth: Karunanidhi
Chennai, June 10 (IANS) Tamil Nadu's erstwhile ruling DMK, which held a top-level meeting here Friday in the wake of two of its leaders, including party chief M. Karunanidhi's daughter, in jail over the 2G scam, Friday said it had no problems with the Congress at the centre but would take a call on its alliance with the party at a meeting in July.
DMK patriarch and former chief minister M. Karunanidhi, speaking to the media after chairing the party's top-level committee meeting here, described the DMK's ties with the Congress as "smooth" and added it had "no problems with the Congress".
On Kanimozhi being charged as co-conspirator for her alleged involvement in the 2G scam, the party said the Karunanidhi family-run Kalaignar TV had only taken a "loan" and linking it to the 2G scam was "condemnable".
Both Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV head Sharad Kumar are charged as co-conspirators and beneficiaries in the 2G spectrum scam for allegedly accepting Rs.214 crore as bribe and are lodged in Tihar Jail in New Delhi since May 20.
DMK’s Lok Sabha member and former union communications minister A.Raja is in Tihar jail charged by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as the main conspirator of the 2G spectrum scam.
To query whether the central government is using CBI as a political weapon against his party Karunanidhi said: “The CBI can be a weapon and it is known. But whether it is a political weapon is not known.”
"Action in the 2G case is condemnable, as Kalaignar TV had got a loan and linking it to 2G is condemnable. It was a loan, a business deal, and had nothing to do with 2G licences. The party would take action on the 2G case legally," the party’s resolution said.
Asked if the party would call off its alliance with the United Progressive Alliance, he said the DMK cadres' views would be ascertained at a general council meeting in July.
He also added that the party was not worried that the Congress "did not help in the 2G case" and said the party does not believe in interfering with court matters.
The DMK's 18 Lok Sabha members offer crucial support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government in New Delhi. The DMK has seven ministers in the Manmohan Singh government.
According to him the spectrum scam was not the main reason for the party’s defeat in the recent assembly elections.
Declaring that the spectrum allocation issue is blown out of proportion he attributed the party’s defeat in the elections to Brahmins.
Queried whether the party is in talks with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for an alliance, he jocularly said: “We are talking with the sadhu (Ramdev) who is on hunger strike.”
With reporters asking questions about spectrum scam and the alliance with Congress, the DMK president for a brief moment lost his cool and wondered why reporters do not ask him about the uniform syllabus for school students brought in by his government and the Madras High Court’s judgement on the case.
The high court Friday ordered the Tamil Nadu government to implement the uniform syllabus education system this academic year. The government had earlier announced it would shelve the system temporarily.
Earlier, the party’s high level committee in its meeting held at the party headquarters passed resolutions on the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils, uniform syllabus, shifting of state secretariat, Legislative Council, Katchathivu island ceded to Sri Lanka, seating arrangement for the party members in the state assembly and others.
The DMK also resolved to hold state-wide meetings June 20-30 to explain the resolutions to party cadres.
This is the second time the party leadership is meeting in just two months.
They met April 27 after DMK MP and Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi was chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum scam.
