Ties with Congress smooth: DMK

Chennai, June 10 (IANS) Tamil Nadu's erstwhile ruling DMK, which held a top-level meeting here Friday in the wake of two of its leaders, including party chief M. Karunanidhi's daughter, in jail over the 2G scam, Friday said it had no problems with the Congress at the centre but would take a call on its alliance with the party at a meeting in July.

DMK patriarch and former chief minister M. Karunanidhi, speaking to the media after chairing the party's top-level committee meeting here, described the DMK's ties with the Congress as "smooth" and added it had "no problems with the Congress".

On Kanimozhi being charged as co-conspirator for her alleged involvement in the 2G scam, the party said the Karunanidhi family-run Kalaignar TV had only taken a "loan" and linking it to the 2G scam was "condemnable".

On the CBI's case against Kanimozhi and A. Raja, former union communications minister who is also an accused in the case and in jail, the DMK chief said: "The CBI can be a weapon, whether a political weapon is not known."

"Action in the 2G case is condemnable, as Kalaignar had got a loan and linking it to 2G is condemnable. It was a loan, a business deal, and had nothing to do with 2G licences," Karunanidhi said.

He also said the party will take action on the 2G case legally.

Asked if the party would call off its alliance with the United Progressive Alliance, he said the DMK cadres' views would be ascertained at a general council meeting in July.

He also added that the party was not worried that the Congress "did not help in the 2G case".

The party meeting passed 10 resolutions, including one on Sri Lankan Tamils.

The DMK is to hold statewide meetings June 20-30 to explain the resolutions to party cadres.

Both Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV head Sharad Kumar are charged as co-conspirators and beneficiaries in the 2G spectrum scam for allegedly accepting Rs.214 crore as bribe and are lodged in Tihar Jail in New Delhi since May 20.

The DMK's 18 Lok Sabha members offer crucial support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government in New Delhi. The DMK has seven ministers in the Manmohan Singh government.

The meeting was held at the party headquarters.

This is the second time the party leadership is meeting in just two months.

They met April 27 after DMK MP and Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi was chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum scam.
