Telecom department to discuss tele-marketing numbers
New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) The Department of Telecom (DoT) Tuesday said it will be meeting security agencies next week to discuss the issue of allocation of identifiable tele-marketing numbers.
"We are meeting security agencies next week to discuss this issue," said DoT secretary R. Chandrashekhar.
The word on the meeting came after the domestic security agency Intelligence Bureau (IB) raised concerns over the allotment of dedicated number series.
Earlier, the telecom regulator had recommended allocation of a series of numbers starting from the digits "70" for tele-marketers, who subsequently demanded that the starting digits be changed to "140".
In its attempt to protect consumers from pesky marketing calls the regulator had also recommended a fine ranging from Rs.25,000 to Rs.250,000 for the defaulting companies who do not apply for the dedicated numbers.
According to the regulator, the allocation of a dedicated number series starting from "70" would make it easier for the customers to recognise these numbers.
