Tamil Nadu to check corruption in welfare schemes

Chennai, Aug 4 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government has decided to use biometric based identification for beneficiaries to prevent leakages and corruption in welfare schemes.

Presenting the AIADMK government’s first budget Thursday, Finance Minister O. Pannerselvam said: “This government will address governance deficit by bringing in better accountability, transparency and ensuring effective delivery of public services through e-Governance ... without corruption.”

He said the government will implement biometric based unique identification for the beneficiaries of various welfare schemes.

“It is expected that this initiative will reduce leakages and ensure prompt disbursement of welfare benefits to genuine beneficiaries."

The minister said the departments of revenue, registration, municipal administration, civil supplies and transport had been identified for e-governance, which will incorporate process re-engineering for easy and effective delivery of public services.

“The intention of the government is to make all government related services available in a seamless manner to the public both in urban and rural areas,” Pannerselvam said.
