Tamil Nadu panel to look into uniform education system

Chennai, June 17 (IANS) Complying with the orders of the Supreme Court, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa Friday constituted a nine-member committee to review the syllabus and text books for rolling out the Uniform Education System (UES).

 
 In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa said the committee will submit its report by July 6 to the Madras High Court in line with the orders of the Supreme Court.
 
 The expert committee will be headed by Chief Secretary Debendranath Sarangi.
 
 The state director of school education  will be the member secretary of the committee.
 
 Other members of the committee are former director (Education), Central Middle Grade Education Board r G. Balasubramanian, former principal of Lady Andal Matriculation School Vijayalakshmi Srinivasan, founder and secretary of DAV group of schools C.Jayadev and principal and director of Padma Seshadri Group of schools Mrs. Y.G.Parthasarathy. Two other members, K.Tripathy and Anil Sethi, represent National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
 
 The state education secretary will also be one of the members.
 
 According to Jayalalithaa, in order to provide equal and quality education, her government brought in amendments to the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act.
 
 The apex court June 15 ordered continuance of the UES for Classes one to six and constitution of a committee by the Tamil Nadu government.
 
 The committee will submit its report by July 6 to the high court, following which it would hear the case daily and decide the case in a week's time.
 
 The UES is the common syllabus for students under matriculation and the state board.
