Take steps to locate missing fishermen: Jayalalithaa

Chennai, April 12 (IANS) AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa Tuesday urged the central and Tamil Nadu governments to locate and bring back the two Indian fishermen who have gone missing since April 2, off the state's waters.

In a statement issued here, she said: "I urge the central and the state governments to take immediate action for their safe return instead of dilatory tactics like writing letters."

According to her, four fishermen - Victor, Marimuthu, Anthony Raj and John Paul - set out fishing from Rameswaram April 2.

Subsequently, the bodies of Victor and Anthony Raj were found, but the other two went missing, casting a doubt on the role of the Sri Lankan Navy in the episode, Jayalalithaa said.

She also took a dig at Congress president Sonia Gandhi's declaration at an election rally here that Sri Lanka had assured the Indian government that the island nation's navy will not kill Indian fishermen.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government Tuesday ordered Rs.500,000 compensation to the families of the four fishermen.
