Suspended for kidnapped kid's killing, 3 cops reinstated
Chandigarh, June 24 (IANS) Chandigarh police have revoked the suspension orders of its three officers who were held guilty of negligence while handling the kidnapping and murder case of five-year-old Khushpreet. The case had rocked this union territory December last year.
The police officers were held guilty in a magisterial probe and the inquiry officer recommended disciplinary action against them. They were suspended Jan 20 and a departmental probe was initiated against them.
"The cops have been reinstated by the review committee of Chandigarh police. The committee reviews the matter every three months and they have followed the guidelines of the Central Vigilance Commission. However, the departmental probe will continue," said a police official here Friday.
"These cops will be posted at police lines and they will not be involved in any dealing with the public," he added.
Kushpreet was kidnapped from his house in Burail village here Dec 21 and his body was recovered from the neighbouring Mohali town Jan 6. Following this, residents of the village indulged in widespread street violence. Police later arrested three people.
Udai Pal, Narinder Patial and Balraj Singh were suspended for taking the incident casually and letting the kidnappers slip away when they came to collect the ransom amount from the victim's father.
Khushpreet's family members were unhappy with the action taken against the policemen.
"We want strict punishment against the tainted cops and demand their dismissal. We have also filed an application in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, demanding strict action against them," said Sukhwinder Singh, Kushpreet's uncle.
