Sonia congratulates Jayalalithaa on massive poll win
New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi called up AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa to congratulate her on her party's massive victory in the Tamil Nadu assembly polls, and invited her for "discussions over tea", party sources said Sunday.
Congress sources told IANS that Gandhi called up the AIADMK chief Saturday evening and invited her to tea.
Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told a TV channel that it was a "courtesy call" and described it as a "healthy trend" for a democracy.
"Congress president congratulated Jayalalithaa, it is a courtesy that is extended in a democracy to a leader who has led her party to victory," Natarajan told Headlines Today channel.
Natarajan dismissed speculation of a possible alliance with the AIADMK in the future.
"As media, you have the right to speculate upon these issues... but as the spokesperson of the party, I only wish to reiterate that all our decisions are based on ideology and principles," she said.
The AIADMK-led front won 203 of the 234-member assembly seats Friday while the DMK-Congress alliance managed a miserable 31.
