Samajwadi Party attacks Mayawati government

Agra, June 8 (IANS) The opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh has accused the Mayawati government of being a corrupt and despotic political outfit, bent on ruining the development, environment and agriculture of India's most populous state.

The party said this in a resolution moved at its two-day national conclave here that ends Wednesday. The SP also lambasted the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"The prestige and credibility of the government is now under a cloud, while the BJP which claimed to be the national alternative is heading towards paataal lok (underground), as is evidenced by the results of recent assembly elections in five states," the resolution states.

The resolution was debated the whole of Tuesday, and in the morning session Wednesday, after an address by party president Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Speaker after speaker accused the Mayawati government of lawlessness, underdevelopment, lack of security to women, and continued exploitation of the poor, the backwards and the minorities.

They said new industries were not being opened and those running have been closed or sold to private interests. From 2009 till date, 21,000 rape cases have been registered in the state, girls below 15 years have been the worst victims, they said.

The party expressed concern and alarm over the BSP's systematic and deliberate attempts to denude forests. Stones are replacing trees at memorials and the air pollution level is going up, it said.

The tourism industry has been badly affected, and students in Uttar Pradesh faced a bleak future as educational standards were going down and there were no job prospects, leading to deep frustration.

The SP demanded reservation for 17 backward castes, which the BSP has denied, it said.

The party called the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre the most corrupt, scam-friendly administration.

Money from corrupt practices was being deposited in foreign banks and was being used for financing real estate, speculative practices, extravagance and unproductive activities, the party said.

A major part of the political resolution focused on the BSP government, largely restricting itself to issues in Uttar Pradesh.
