Rights abusers will be punished: Omar Abdullah
Srinagar, Aug 15 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday reiterated his resolve of zero tolerance to human rights violations and said those involved in such practices would be punished.
Referring to alleged civilian killings by security forces in the Kashmir Valley's Sopore and Surankote in Poonch, Abdullah said: "We have taken prompt action and people involved in these incidents will be punished as per the law. The facts will be placed before the people."
In his I-Day address, Abdullah asked the central government not to overlook the recommendations to be made by the team of interlocutors on Kashmir.
He said gun wielded by guerrillas or security forces was no solution to the Kashmir problem.
Abdullah unfurled the national flag and took salute at the main Independence Day function at the heavily guarded Bakshi Stadium here.
A three-tier security was put in place in and around the parade venue. Separatists had called for a protest shutdown. However, the day passed off peacefully.
