Rajasthan districts on alert after sat phone detected

Jaipur, Aug 11 (IANS) Police in three Rajasthan districts have been told to be on high alert after intelligence agencies caught frequencies of a satellite phone being used to make calls across the border to Pakistan, informed sources said.

The alert was sounded after satellite phone frequencies were caught in Hanumangarh, Churu and Sriganganagar districts, said a senior police officer.

The Rajasthan Police's criminal investigation department (CID) has written to the superintendents of police of the three districts. "Teams have been constituted to nab the phone user," said an official.

"We received the frequency last time in Churu districts. The phone was used for a couple of minutes and then switched off. Raids were conducted at many places," he added.

It is the third time in three months that security agencies have caught the presence of satellite phones but failed to locate any of them.

In May, frequencies were received in Gajsinghpur area of Sriganganagar while its presence in Hanumangarh district came up in July.

Usage of satellite phone without prior permission is banned not only in bordering areas, but throughout the state.

Rajasthan shares a 1,071 km border with Pakistan.
