Omar posts Digvijay's clarification on Twitter
Jammu, June 4 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday posted an official statement of Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on his account on microblogging site Twitter to dispel rumours that the alliance of his National Conference with the Congress was in trouble.
"For those of you who asked me about Digvijay's statement," Omar wrote on the link to the statement in which the Congress leader denied that he had made any adverse comments about the chief minister. Digvijay Singh said he had, instead, praised the chief minister for holding “credible panchayat elections in the state after more than three decades".
Omar's response came in the wake of reports in a section of the media, quoting the Congress leader as saying: "Omar should avoid visiting Delhi at weekends, and instead should spend time with his people who have elected him."
Speaking at a function in New Delhi Friday, Digvijay Singh was also quoted as saying that the chief minister needs "more time to prove himself". The remarks were read as evidence of some disagreements cropping up between the alliance partners, ruling the state since Jan 5, 2009.
In his statement, the Congress leader refuted the claims of criticising the chief minister. "Far from it I hailed his efforts in holding successful, credible panchayat elections after a gap of three decades, wherein the turnout was impressive."
"On his (Omar's) visits to Delhi, I just mentioned in passing that some media reports suggest that he frequently visits Delhi to meet his family, to which (the visits) I requested him to avoid. However, I am informed today that in the last four months, the Chief Minister has hardly visited Delhi and most of the times his visits have been for official purposes and I also understand that his public contact has increased manifold. This is indeed very heartening note to me," Digvijay Singh said in the statement.
