Modi using literacy drive funds for own publicity: Congress
Gandhinagar, June 13 (IANS) The Congress Monday sought to refute Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's charge of injustice by the central government and accused him of instead diverting funds for the literacy drive for his own publicity.
"It is, in fact, Modi who is squandering the funds given by the centre for the Sarva Sikhsa Abhiyan on his own publicity," Leader of Opposition in the assembly Shaktisinh Gohil told media persons, and demanded an immediate stop to misuse of funds.
"The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government had given just Rs.17.66 crore to the state in 2001-2002 for the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan while the present UPA (United Progressive Aliiance) government has given Rs.440.65 crore for it this year," he said.
Similarly, Gohil said, the central government has substantially increased allocation for Integrated Education for Disabled Children (IEDC).
Criticising Modi for the campaign that Gujarat was giving considerable revenue to the central government but was getting much less money in comparison, Gohil said the 12th Finance Commission gave Gujarat Rs.21,900.47 crore while the 13th Finance Commission gave Rs.44,107.09 crore.
In addition to this, Gujarat is getting money through other schemes and projects also. Gohil accused the chief minister of squandering money for his publicity and also diverting money through corrupt practices.
"Consequently, Gujarat was not getting benefit of all these resources," he added.
