Maoists call for poll boycott

Kolkata, April 11 (IANS) Describing the electoral process as a 'farce’, the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) Monday gave a call to boycott the elections in West Bengal and other states.

“People across the country are facing ill effects of corruption  practiced by the politicians, price rise, poverty, unemployment compounded with destruction of ecology. The politicians turning a blind eye to people’s suffering, are engaged in struggle for power,” read the statement signed by Maoists’ central committee spokesperson Abhay.

Describing the Communist Party of India-Marxist's (CPI-M) rule in West Bengal as "fascist", the Maoists accused the Marxists of acquiring farmland and working for the interests of bureaucratic capitalists.

Accusing the state police and administration of perpetrating atrocities against peasants, including women, the statement read: “The cruel repression by the state police, central paramilitary forces and the CPI-M’s armed cadre on the militant peasantry of Nandigram and Singur who opposed seizure of their lands will remain a permanent blot in the history.”

Accusing the Trinamool Congress of cashing in on the dissatisfaction and the hatred of people towards the CPI-M, the statement said: “Whatever Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee may promise today, once in power her rule is not going to be basically any different from that of the Left Front.”

“It is very clear that her rule in alliance with Congress would be a continuation of the pro-feudal, pro-corporate and anti-people policies implemented by all ruling class parties, including the CPI-M, till date.”

“So the only way before the people of Bengal is to boycott these sham elections and to build militant people's struggles while keeping the Maoist People's War at the core with the inspiration of the glorious struggle spirit of the Lalgarh people."

"The real alternative is to expand more militantly and in a more organised manner the alternative people's political power which came to the fore in an embryonic form as a result of the historic Lalgarh movement,” said Abhay in his statement.
