Man with revolver detained in Rahul's vicinity
Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), July 7 (IANS) A man carrying a licensed revolver was detained by security personnel Thursday while trying to approach Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi whose padyatra has reached Aligarh, police said.
Hari Sharma was held by the Special Protection Group (SPG) in Jikarpur village under Tappal police station after he tried to move close to Gandhi.
“He (Sharma) had no malafide intention. He is a local and a properly verified person. It was just out of anxiety the man got out of his car and moved towards Rahul's cavalcade," Senior Superintendent of Police Satyendra Vir Singh told reporters in Aligarh, some 350 km from Lucknow.
“It should not be termed as any security breach…It was just a matter of chance that the man came in the way taken by the Congress leader. If the visits of VVIPs are unannounced, such an incident can always take place," he said.
Gandhi is on a five-day foot march in Uttar Pradesh to raise farmer issue - widely seen as a campaign against the Mayawati government's land acquisition policy ahead of elections next year.
He reached Aligarh district Wednesday evening and is interacting with farmers to know their problems related to land acquisition.
Gandhi's padyatra has been launched ahead of a Kisan Mahapanchayat in Aligrah Saturday.
