Lokpal Bill should provide for time-bound action: BJP
Chennai, April 9 (IANS) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad Saturday said the new Lokpal Bill should cover politicians and bureaucrats and provide for time-bound action on corruption complaints.
Welcoming Anna Hazare's movement for drafting of a stringent Lokpal Bill and its passage into law, Prasad said: "We want accountability of all including politicians and bureaucrats. The law should have time-bound action on corruption complaints against politicians and bureaucrats."
He said what Hazare's fast has shown to the world is that civil society can force the government to act.
To a question whether the Lokpal Bill should also cover the judiciary, he said there have been complaints about corruption in judiciary. But it has to be seen how that issue can be addressed.
Prasad also urged the government to call for an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.
Queried about the action the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre took to implement the Lokpal Bill, Prasad said: "We twice tried to implement the bill - in 1999 and 2002 - but did not have the majority in the Lok Sabha."
He said Hazare's protest has shown the frustration of the people, but added that the Indian democracy should be run by a parliamentary process through elections.
