Bangalore, June 7 (IANS) The Karnataka chief minister, ministers and legislators Tuesday got more than a 100 percent hike in their salary and allowances with the assembly, boycotted by the entire opposition, approving the increase.
The increase will cost the state exchequer over Rs.23 crore in a year.
The salary of the chief minister has been raised from Rs.12,000 to Rs.30,000 per month, cabinet ministers from Rs.10,000 to Rs.25,000 per month and junior ministers from Rs.8,000 to Rs.16,000.
The chief minister’s sumptuary allowance has also been doubled from Rs.75,000 to Rs.150,000.
Law makers will also take home a higher salary of Rs.20,000 instead of Rs.10,000.
There is also doubling of other allowances such as house rent, petrol, and travel.
The bills for increasing the salary and allowances was introduced by Law Minister S. Suresh Kumar and was adopted by voice vote as only ruling Bharatiya Janata Party members were present.
The Congress and Janata Dal-Secular have stayed away from the session that began June 2, the JD-S since the first day and the Congress from the second day, demanding resignation of Speaker K.G. Bopaiah following Supreme Court “strictures” against him over disqualification of 16 law makers in October last year.
The session was adjourned indefinitely Tuesday, six days ahead of schedule, following the absence of the opposition members.
