Joint venture between Sony and Toshiba for combined LCD operations.
Sony and Toshiba have stuck a deal between themselves to combine their LCD operations and have decided to form an innovative entity. Insiders in the Industry divulged that this new entity from the two major corporations will unseat Sharp from the number Uno position which it holds as the biggest manufacturers of tiny and mid-sized LCD panels that are often used in tablet computers and smart phones.
It may be interesting to note that in the year 2010, 9.2 percent of the global small LCD market was held by Toshiba Mobile display and 6.1 percent of the market share was held by Sony Mobile display Co. A major lion’s share of the market of nearly 14.8 percent was held by Sharp Corp.
Hence the joint venture came as a result of the stiff challenge from Sharp. To tackle and outsmart Sharp in the LCD market, the two companies have decided to combine their operations. This new JV will outsmart, beat all its rivals in the LCD market. Trusted aide sources further reveals that the two major will try to sell nearly upto 80 percent of its new entity to the Japanese govt supported investment fund innovation Network Corp of Japan.
It is also anticipated that the hub of the innovative entity may be on mass-manufacaturing OEL (organic electroluminescence) panels that offers more resolutions than the LCD and requires only minimal amount of energy consumption.
