Jammu and Kashmir BJP legislator opposes action against him
Jammu, May 7 (IANS) Former Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Chaman Lal Gupta has questioned the party's decision to suspend him and issue a notice following cross-voting in the legislative council polls April 13.
In the letter written Friday, contents of which were leaked to media Saturday, Gupta said: "What documentary evidence the party high command has to suspend me and issue me a showcause notice."
Gupta, who was leader of the BJP legislature party, wrote to BJP's disciplinary committee chief O.P. Kohli, maintaining that he was "still the leader of the legislature party".
The party has 11 seats in the assembly - its heighest tally ever in the state assembly.
The cross-voting in the legislative council elections enabled the ruling National Conference-Congress coalition candidates to win at the cost of the BJP's candidate.
Seven legislators were suspended from the basic membership of the party and served show cause notice following the cross-voting.
The legislators who faced action described the party action "unjustified" and "illegal".
A public interest litigation was also filed against all the 11 BJP legislators in the state high court.
Gupta said in his letter: "The party high command should halt all its action until the high court comes out with its verdict. As of now, the matter is sub judice."
Earlier, the suspended party legislators launched a broadside against the party's chief whip Ashok Khajuria, charging him with hatching the conspiracy to weaken the party in collusion with the ruling National Conference.
Khajuria is one of the four BJP legislators against whom no action has been taken by the party. It is believed that the four had voted for party candidate Thakur Ranjit Singh in the legislative council election.
