I will be an impartial speaker: Karthikeyan

Thiruvananthapuram, June 22 (IANS) Kerala assembly Speaker G. Karthikeyan Wednesday said he was not worried about the wafer-thin majority of the Congress-led United Democratic Front and would act impartially.

"I will do the job of an impartial speaker and would treat both the treasury and the opposition benches with the respect that they need to be given," Karthikeyan told reporters here a day ahead of the 13th Kerala assembly’s first major session.

It will start with the governor’s address and be followed by the budget session of the Oommen Chandy government that assumed office May 18.

The UDF government’s first budget would be presented by state Finance Minister K.M. Mani on July 8.

The UDF has a strength of 72 members, while the Left opposition has 68 members in the 140-member assembly.

“Look, the job I have got is to see the business of the government is conducted in the most proper manner, and come what may, I will do that by seeking the cooperation of all in the house,” said Karthikeyan.

Karthikeyan is a six-time veteran Congress legislator and has been a minister on two occasions in the past. He is generally seen as a soft spoken person and hence many feel he has a tough job on hand as speaker.

Reacting to the statement of leader of opposition V.S. Achuthanandan that the Chandy government will find the going tough because if any one of their member goes to the toilet, then the majority might not be there, Karthikeyan said that everyone is free to have their own opinion.

But he added that one of his main aim as speaker would be to see that the recommendations made by the numerous assembly committees be implemented by the government departments.

He also said that steps are being taken to see that the assembly proceedings be telecast live and also considering if webcasting can be done.

 The session ends July 20.
