Hazare to approach Supreme Court -- to protest

New Delhi, July 17 (IANS) Veteran Gandhian and social activist Anna Hazare said Sunday that he will approach the Supreme Court Monday to ensure that he is allowed to protest Aug 16.

"The government says Ramdev's campaign was crushed, in the same way Anna's agitation will be crushed. Is this a democracy or autocracy? We will go to the Supreme Court tomorrow," Hazare said here.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's campaign against corruption here was ended with a police crackdown on the night of June 4-5.

"In a democracy every citizen has the constitutional right to protest, so we will sit in protest on Aug 16," Hazare said.

Campaigning for a strong Lokpal bill to check corruption, Hazare fasted for five days in April. The government then set up a panel of five cabinet ministers and the Hazare team to draw up a Lokpal bill.

Although the two sides met more than once, the efforts failed following enormous differences between them.

Hazare then declared he will again fast from Aug 16 -- if a comprehensive legislation was not brought in parliament before that day.
