Haryana releases water into Yamuna river, no flood threat

Chandigarh, Aug 16 (IANS) Over 600,000 cusecs of water has been released by Haryana into the Yamuna river from the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district, officials said Tuesday, adding that there was no threat of flooding downstream.

The water was released downstream into the river from the barrage following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the river in adjoining Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand in the last 2-3 days.

“There is no immediate need for panic for towns and cities downstream as the river bed was largely dry in the recent days and this discharge is unlikely to cause any flooding,” said an official of Haryana's irrigation department.

The Yamuna river flows through the national capital after passing through various places in Haryana.

Met officials here said that Haryana has recorded 1,263 mm of rainfall up to Tuesday morning.

They said that the maximum of 116 mm rainfall was received by Radaur in Yamunanagar district.
