Gurgaon gets first mayor
Gurgaon, June 21 (IANS) Vimal Yadav, an independent candidate, was elected the first mayor of the Gurgaon Municipal Corporation (GMC) Tuesday.
Yashpal Batra was elected senior deputy mayor while Parminder Kataria was chosen deputy mayor.
The first election of the Gurgaon civic body was held May 15. Out of 35 seats, Independents won 25 while six went to the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the remaining four were won by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominees.
Vimal Yadav, who is reportedly supported by the Congress, got 20 votes and defeated BJP candidate Seema Paheja, who got only nine votes. Indian National Lok Dal, which has six councillors, opposed the election of the Mayor and didn't participate.
Yadav said his priority would be to upgrade the drinking water and sewage facilities in the millennium city.
