Goa cop booked for threatening magistrate
Panaji, June 29 (IANS) A Goa Police inspector has been booked for threatening a special judicial magistrate (SJM) in connection with a case involving the death of a constable, police said Wednesday.
In her complaint, SJM Maria Mascarenhas said Crime Branch officer Praveen Vast had Tuesday night tried to threaten her through an intermediary into deleting his name from the dying declaration of police constable Chandru Gawas, who consumed rat poison while on duty Friday (June 24).
Gawas, who succumbed to the poisoning Tuesday, had named Vast and other Crime Branch officers of harassing him to death.
“I have also asked for police protection after I was threatened by Vast’s associate to change the dying declaration last night,” Mascarenhas said, adding that the dying declaration was in custody of the local trial court.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police Aditya Arya summoned Crime Branch officers, including Superintendent of Police Mangaldas Naik and Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Salgaonkar on the issue.
“The police inspector has already been booked for abetment of suicide of our constable Chandru. I had summoned these officers to know their side of the story,” Arya said.
