Girl found dead in police station was not murdered: Police
Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh), June 12 (IANS) Ruling out murder as the cause of death of a teenaged girl found dead in a police station compound in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district, police Sunday claimed that she committed suicide.
“The post-mortem report indicates it is a case of suicidal hanging," Superintendent of Police D.K. Rai told IANS over the telephone.
"Asphyxia - as a result of hanging - has been cited as the reason behind the girl's death. An abrasion has been found on her neck and right leg. There are no other injury marks on the body," added Rai.
On being asked whether the girl was raped, Rai said: "As of now, nothing can be said with confirmation in this regard. We have to wait for the slide examination reports."
The police claim came on a day when the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said it would send a team to investigate the alleged rape and killing of the minor girl.
The body of the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in the premises of the Nighaasan police station Friday night in Lakhimpur Kheri district, some 130 km from Lucknow. Eleven police personnel posted at the police station were suspended following protest by local residents.
Her family alleged that she was raped, killed and her body was hung from a tree to make it look like a suicide.
According to police, the teenager along with her family used to live near a building coming up inside the premises of the police station.
"The victim and her family were given a place to live by the contractor looking after the construction work," said Rai.
The girl Friday morning had taken her cattle for grazing. When she did not return after several hours, her mother started looking for her and found her daughter hanging from the tree.
