Farmer leader Manveer Tewatia arrested in Delhi
New Delhi/Noida, July 9 (IANS) Farmer leader Manveer Singh Tewatia was arrested from near Tilak Bridge in New Delhi by Uttar Pradesh police after a chase. He is wanted for allegedly instigating the farmers violence in Bhatta-Parsaul in Greater Noida in May.
Tewatia was chased by Uttar Pradesh police when he was spotted coming out of his hideout in Hauz Khas in south Delhi. He was arrested after his Esteem car was overtaken by the police vehicles near Tilak Bridge.
The police said after the Bhatta-Parsaul violence the Noida police chief constituted a team of 25 police officers to nab Tewatia. The police were keeping a close eye on house No. C-31 Hauz Khas where he was hiding. On Saturday when police noticed Tewatia leaving the house in an Esteem car they followed him and tried to stop the car near Tilak Bridge. Tewatia got out of the car and started running with the police giving chase. They finally nabbed him after running for about three kilometres.
"The police have taken him to the spot near Bhatta-Parsaul where he has hidden some robbed weapons. Some other recoveries are also to be made from him so he has been taken to the spot," said Anant Deo, Noida city Superintendent of Police.
The May violence between agitating farmers and the state police had left four people dead and about 15, including Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate Deepak Agrawal, injured.
