Driven by superstition, they dig out dead woman's body

Ranchi, June 6 (IANS) In a bizarre incident, a dead woman's body was dug out from a Jharkhand village and buried elsewhere as the villagers believed the woman's unnatural death might bring calamities to the place.

According to police, Uma Devi, a resident of Semra village on the outskirts of Ranchi, died under mysterious circumstances Friday. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan and her in-laws claimed it was a case of suicide.

However, Devi's parents blamed the in-laws for her death and said they used to torture her. Thereafter, the in-laws were arrested.

However, the post-mortem revealed that she was pregnant. Her body was handed over to her family and they buried her on the outskirts of the village beneath a river bridge on Saturday night.

Fearing mishappenings in the village, people Sunday forced the police to dig out the body and perform the last rites somewhere else.

"The villagers were angry over burial of the dead beneath a river bridge. Considering the sentiments of the villagers, the body was exhumed and re-buried at another place. The villagers were fearing bad happening as she was pregnant and her death was unnatural," a police officer told IANS Monday.

The woman's husband works at a private firm in Mumbai.
