DMK's executive council starts deliberations

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), July 23 (IANS) Tamil Nadu's opposition DMK Saturday began its executive council meeting, deliberating on the road ahead for the party after its defeat in the April assembly elections as well on continuing the alliance with the Congress.

All the top leaders of the party are present at the meeting being chaired by party president M.Karunanidhi.

Other issues such as organisational restructuring and reasons for the defeat in the assembly elections will also be discussed at the executive and general council meetings slated Saturday and Sunday respectively in Coimbatore, around 500 km from Chennai.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the executive council meeting, DMK leader T.R.Baalu dismissed the reports about rift between Karunanidhi’s two sons - M.K.Alagiri and M.K.Stalin.

Baalu said the meeting would also deliberate on the party continuing in the alliance government at the centre and the two ministerial berths that the party held and are now vacant.

Putting at rest the speculations about his attendance, Alagiri came here to participate in the meeting. He is a central minister.

Party banners with pictures of Karunanidhi and Stalin were put up by party cadres at major places and on the roads connecting the airport and the city.
