DMDK, CPI-M tie up for Tamil Nadu local polls

Chennai, Sep 27 (IANS) The DMDK of actor-turned-politician A. Vijayakant and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have joined hands to take on the AIADMK, the DMK and other parties in next month's local body elections in Tamil Nadu.

Annoucing the decision to reporters here Tuesday, Vijayakant said: "The third front is good news. My party would start campaigning immediately.”

Queried about the reasons for leaving the AIADMK fold after fighting the assembly elections together, Vijayakant said he would explain that to the people during the campaign.

The DMDK and the CPI-M were part of the AIADMK-led front during the April assembly elections.

However the allies were upset when the AIADMK released its list of candidates even as seat-sharing talks were going on.

A similar situation arose during the assembly elections and the AIADMK had to backtrack, saying that the list's release was a mistake.

Meanwhile, all other major parties in the state like the DMK, PMK, Congress, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the MDMK are going it alone in the civic elections.
