Congress ready for by-polls in Andhra
Hyderabad, Aug 25 (IANS) The ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh Thursday said it is ready for by-elections if the resignations of 29 members of state assembly loyal to YSR Congress party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy are accepted by the speaker.
State Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana told reporters that the party would make no attempts to persuade the legislators to take back their resignations.
As many as 26 legislators belonging to the Congress Monday submitted their resignations both from the assembly and their respective parties. Two lawmakers of the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and one of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) also resigned.
Their move was to protest the inclusion of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's name in a first information report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the assets case of his son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.
"There is no question of persuading the MLAs to take back their resignations. Those who have done wrong should undergo the punishment. We are not going to bow to their pressure," he said.
The Congress chief alleged that Jaganmohan Reddy was putting pressure on legislators to quit by offering them crores of rupees.
Stating that his party was ready to face by-elections, Botsa Satyanarayana said the YSR Congress party will not win a single seat. He remarked that if the YSR Congress party wins, it will be the victory of corruption.
Legislators loyal to Jaganmohan said they would put pressure on the speaker to accept their resignations.
