Cleric questions Modi's pro-Muslim claim
Ahmedabad, Sep 19 (IANS) A Muslim cleric who had offered a skull cap to fasting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, which he politely refused, Monday said the act had laid bare Modi's claims of being pro-Muslim.
"Skull cap is a gift of Sufi saints and if the chief minister refuses to accept this, how can he accept the Muslims," Imam Shahi Saiyed of Thasra told reporters here.
The entire incident was captured on camera Sunday, when Modi, who had been accepting a variety of headgears and shawls from religious heads during his fast, politely turned down the skull cap offered by the imam. Instead, Modi sought the shawl the cleric was wearing around his neck, which was duly transferred.
Shafi Madani, former president of Muslim religious group Jamat-e-Islam-i-Hind Gujarat, also said that a lot of "fake Muslims" were created for the event.
