Chhattisgarh cops in gun-battle with Maoists
Raipur, May 23 (IANS) Chhattisgarh Police officials here Monday said that a police team was involved in a gun battle with the Maoists along the state's border with Orissa but the number of casualties could not be confirmed immediately.
"There definitely was some gun battle of the police search team with the Maoists in a deep forested area but we can't confirm whether there is any casualty or not," said an official.
The incident was reported to have occurred in Sonbhadra area in Orissa.
"We are unable to know the exact situation about what happened with a 10-member police squad led by Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pawar, as we are getting conflicting reports about their fate," a top police official told IANS, when asked to comment about TV reports saying
that 10 Chhattisgarh policemen were killed in the attack.
"I can't go by TV reports, we will confirm about casualty figure only when our men reach the spot," the official added.
Meanwhile, state Director General of Police Vishwaranjan said reinforcements could not be sent to the spot in the night and the area was thickly-forested.
