The BI applications comprise of decision activities like decision support systems, inquiry and reporting, statistical analysis, online analytical processing (OLAP), data mining, and forecasting.

The business Intelligence applications can be like

• Venture – extensive or confined to one division, department or project.

• Centrally instigated or motivated by user demand

The term was initially used long back in 1996, stated by a Garner report:
