BJP workers detained after clash with police

Lucknow, June 28 (IANS) Hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) women activists were detained here Tuesday after they clashed with the police while demonstrating against the Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government over deteriorating law and order in the state.

Shouting anti-Mayawati slogans, BJP workers converged at the Qaiserbagh crossing and headed towards the Vidhan Bhavan in Hazratganj.

After being prevented from carrying out the march, BJP activists started forcing their way through the barricades, following which police used mild force to disperse them.

Even as police claimed no one was injured in the incident, BJP spokesperson Vijay Pathak said several party activists were hurt.

“We were targeted at the behest of the chief minister, who has miserably failed to maintain law and order in the state. Be it the mysterious death of deputy chief medical officer Y.S. Sachan or the incidents of sexual assaults on women in parts of Uttar Pradesh… It appears there is anarchy all over the state," Pathak told reporters.

“The Mayawati government is in the habit of gagging every voice raised against it. Taking into account the crime incidents in the state, she (Mayawati) has lost the right to continue in power. We would continue our campaign against her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government," he added.
