BJP wins Jabera by-poll in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, June 29 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Wednesday won the Jabera assembly by-poll by defeating his nearest Congress rival by over 11,000 votes, an official said.

The BJP’s Dashrath Singh Lodhi defeated Congress candidate Tanya Solomon, daughter of five-time Jabera legislator Ratnesh Solomon, whose death had left the seat vacant.

“The BJP has won the Jabera by-election by 11,738 votes,” the state's Chief Electoral Officer P.C. Meena said.

The Jabera constituency is in Damoh district, over 250 km from here.

It is the third by-poll win for the BJP this year, after it bagged  the Sonkatch and Kukshi assembly seats in February.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan welcomed the result and congratulated his party cadres.

“The result symbolises the faith of people in the Madhya Pradesh government,” he said.

Congress legislator and Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh conceded defeat, but said the BJP had "misused government machinery to win the seat".
