BJP wants rape victims, kin to join sit-in

Lucknow, July 19 (IANS) In a bid to corner the Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government over "rising crimes against women", the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday called upon victims and their families to join party leader Uma Bharti’s sit-in here July 21.

For Uma Bharti’s day-long sit-in, the BJP has instructed its functionaries to appeal to rape victims and their families across the state to come down to the state capital for registering their protest, a party leader said.

“Be it the Dalit teenaged girl of Banda who was raped by a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator, or the minor girl who was brutally murdered in a police station in Lakhimpur-Kheri. We have asked family members of all such victims to support us in our campaign against the state government," BJP spokesperson Vijay Pathak told reporters here.

“By bringing to the fore all such cases that the government tried to cover up, we want to unmask the real face of (ruling) Bahujan Samaj Party that has miserably failed to control crimes, particularly against women and girls," said Pathak.

"Almost everyday, one gets to hear news about rapes, assaults and other crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh," he added.

Uma Bharti would hold a demonstration at the Deen Dayal Smritika along with hundreds of party’s women activists.
